New Music Edmonton 2020/21 Season – The No Normal

In spite of unprecedented obstacles this year, there is a breathtaking consensus among artists, funders, and Edmonton’s creative community as a whole artistic work is essential and must continue. With this in mind, New Music Edmonton is moving forward with a completely digital season, full of different kinds of events, initiatives, and lots of new work.

Our plans maintain NME’s basic mandate to celebrate what’s new in music, and in sound-based art, while prioritizing our role as contributors to an equitable and accessible arts scene. We’re working with creatives in unprecedented and varied ways, inviting experimentation in both content and delivery, and reimagining our role as a presenter.

In so many ways, the 2020-21 season is the start of a new era for us. What was normal won’t be again, and the only “new normal” is no normal at all.

All events in our 2020-21 season are free, but we welcome donations to support our programming. Clicking the ticket link above will take you to our Canada Helps donation page.

New Music Edmonton Presents: The No Normal – 2020/21 Season, at-a-glance

New Work & Performances

Over the summer, we commissioned 15 new creations a combination of audio pieces, classical components, and audio visual work by a diverse group of artists. New work, as well as performances by electronic, classical, and multidisciplinary artists, will be shared over the course of the season.

The No Normal Podcast

At the core of our 2020/21 season will be a brand new, overdue venue for us – a monthly hour-long podcast! Hosted by local radio veteran, Oskar Zybart, each episode will introduce listeners to the next round of upcoming events as well as feature newly commissioned works, and discussions between this season’s lineup of artists and a roster of guest interviewers. The No Normal podcast will also include stories, conversations with friends, local organizations, and much more!

Now Hear This Festival

We’re making up for the cancellation of March’s Now Hear This Festival with not one but two digital installments this season! Both the Winter Edition of the festival, hosted in December 2020 and the Spring Edition, coming in March 2021, will offer newly recorded creations, outreach activities, and performances!

Stay tuned for especially unique programming, happening during the December solstice, March equinox and June solstice.
