2018 marks New Music Edmonton’s 6th annual appearance at the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. The NME Fringe Players showcase of local experimental music-making with a theme – The Sound of Words in a World of Sound – we will be presenting five hour-long shows as part of the 2018 Fringe Bring Your Own Venue. We have invited a fantastic group of Edmonton’s most adventurous artists, musicians, poets, filmmakers, puppeteers and sculptors to present 5 one-of-a-kind performances.
Our series opens with a NME debut, as we welcome Edmonton music collective, Good Information will present a performance based on the Brian Eno/ Peter Schmidt concept of oblique strategies, with all five musicians receiving text-based directions for improvisation from a real-time app, as well as from Wee Book Inn books chosen by the audience.

It’s a double bill! Experimental musician Myles Bartel and spoken word poet Tab C.A. present their meditative and deeply compelling project, Moonbathers.

The Time-travelers Three are: Simeon Blimke(electronics), Ianna Ings (puppets and sound) and Demmi Dupri (film/audio). They will be visiting from both the past and the future, stopping in at The Wee Book Inn for repairs, to give a show and to seek your help in restoring the musical-temporal continuum connecting us to the 31st Century. Be prepared for an adventure in space and time…and sound? and film? and? puppets!
This is the debut performance of A-rhythmia with Chenoa Anderson and Alison Grant-Preville, flutes, Jane Berry, mezzo soprano, Allison Balcetis, saxophone and Mark Segger, percussion. Largely an improvised work, the ensemble takes its inspiration, and material, from the incredible blogs of heart transplant recipient Jillianne Code: I am. Still. ALIVE. The musicians will place themselves in and around the audience, using the entire Wee Book Inn space.
Closing off our 2018 Fringe series will be an all-stars group comprised of members of the other ensembles and visual artist Rosie Nay. Expect the unexpected, as they say! And don’t be surprised to find yourself part of a splendid circus of words, sound, movement and live sculpture!
