Once again, the core of our 2022/23 season will be our monthly hour-long podcast The No Normal! Co-produced by NME Artistic Director Ian Crutchley and local radio veteran, Oskar Zybart, each episode will introduce listeners to interviews and music from sound artists from Edmonton and abroad. The No Normal podcast will also include stories, conversations with friends, local organizations, and much more! Sunday, March 26, 2023. 2:30 PM (The Orange Hub Black Box Theatre): Le Désert Mauve (The Purple Desert), a chamber opera for voices, instruments, live electronics and video based on Nicole Brossard’s novel, an iconic work of queer literature and a key work of Québécois literature, with Ensemble Ad Lib and composer/ conductor Symon Henry (Montréal)
Workshop – Creative Extensions of Persian Classical Music with Hesam Abedini and Afarin Nazarijou
In this workshop, Hesam Abedini will introduce you to the repertoire of classical Persian music (Radif). You will learn about the structure of classical Persian music by learning and singing a short song in Persian, for which we will provide you with translations and music during the workshop. This workshop is designed for everyone, regardless of your prior musical experience or interaction with Persian culture and language.
The workshop will conclude with a duo performance by Afarin Nazarijou on Qanun and Hesam Abedini on Vocals. In this performance, Afarin and Hesam will present their polystylistic approach to music-making inspired by Persian music and free improvisation.
