Out Loud

by

Saturday, June 7, 7:30 pm, 2025
Mile Zero Dance
9931- 78 Avenue NW, Edmonton

Created and Performed by Helen Pridmore, Jennifer Beattie, and Terri Hron. Chorus members: John Bellucci, Louis Bouchier, Luna Drury, Jen Dunford, Makenna Graham, Gerry Morita, Phoenix Phillips, Nancy Sandercock, erψn temp3st, Giovanni Young.

Out Loud is a two-part opera, a contemporary feminist take on classic female characters in literature. Using live performance, electronic audio, and video, the three performers present multi-layered versions of familiar tales, exploring and exposing new strengths and approaches to understanding these well-loved women. Part I, “Solstice Queen”, is a re-examination of Titania, Queen of the Fairies, familiar to many from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Titania is represented here as a powerful leader, gathering her fairy troupe around her as night falls and the mystical Solstice night begins. Part II, “Mermaid”, is a re-telling of the Little Mermaid fairy tale: in our version, the Mermaid has authority and strength, and explores her powers through conversations with her ancestors. A group of community improvisers will enhance “Out Loud”, using their voices and imaginations, serving as acolytes and commenting on the action, Greek chorus style.

The Artists

Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie, called a “smashing success” (San Francisco Examiner) and praised for her “warmth” (New York Times) and “exuberant voice and personality” (Opera News), revels in performing everything from traditional to brand-new classical repertoire, as well as engaging in ongoing collaborations with performance, visual, jazz, folk, and theater artists. An avid interpreter of new music, she has premiered many pieces written for her voice.(USA).

With a voice described as “acrobatic, finely-tuned and characterful” (composer Michael Finnissy) and with an “impressively extended technical and stylistic range” (The Whole Note), soprano Helen Pridmore enjoys a career focused on contemporary scored music, experimental music and improvisation. As a soprano soloist she has performed at Carnegie Hall (with the American Symphony Orchestra), at venues in Europe, USA, Mexico, and Japan, and from coast to coast across Canada. As a chamber musician she has toured extensively, and has premiered many works by Canadian composers.

Terri Hron is a musician, a performer and a multimedia artist. Her work explores historical performance practice, field recording, invented ceramic instruments and video scores. She often works in close collaboration with others and produces performances, gatherings and events. Her research focuses on collaborative practice and scoring in multimedia performance art.
