What is sound lab? A new series of free public events featuring hands-on, any-skill-level activities about sound and listening. Taking place at the Edmonton Public Library, creativity and fun are the goals and the name of this series says it all:
Sound: it’s about sounds – making them and listening to them
Lab: experiment and be creative, make discoveries, have fun!
New Music Edmonton’s Ian Crutchley, along with an A-list of innovative, friendly Edmonton artists, will be on hand to lead monthly sessions, with a different topic each time. You don’t need to read music or play an instrument or have any experience: just come along, be yourself and be part of a fun group that’s looking to use sound creatively. We’ll be making instruments, trying out some basic electronics, using our voices, listening to records, and much, much more. The atmosphere will be welcoming, relaxed, and 100% positive. No previous experience or materials needed: just bring yourself and your curiosity about using sound for fun and creativity!
Beginning in 2020, NME will be working with the outreach programs in the Bissell Centre to offer creative sonic workshops exclusively to families who use the Bissell Centre’s services.
Since 2014 we have engaged a National Arts Centre Music Alive certified instructor on a regular basis. Given topics related to NME programming, she arranges visits to Edmonton schools, where she leads discussion of elemental music matters and participatory activities. She introduces students to the ideas behind new music.
In the coming season NME plans to execute a carefully-considered, 4-year roll-out focused on making entry-level sound and music experiences available to anyone in our community. We will be directing our resources towards four ongoing series of events. Each is distinctive from the others in some way, but all of them have the same basic goal: to offer safe, welcoming space for Edmontonians to enjoy participatory, no-experience-necessary, musical experiences.
Sonic Play School: New Music Edmonton and McLuhan House/ ArtsHab Edmonton came together in 2017-18 to initiate Sonic Play School, a series of public events featuring hands-on workshops and mentor-led discussions targeted to any skill level. We asked no experience of participants, just a willingness to come along and be part of a fun group that’s looking to use sound creatively. Above all this was a chance to be part of a fun community and to participate in music-making in an informal, non-judgemental atmosphere.
