2024-25 Season

The No Normal Podcast

Once again, the core of our season will be our monthly hour-long podcast The No Normal! Co-produced by NME Artistic Director Ian Crutchley and local radio veteran, Oskar Zybart, each episode will introduce listeners to interviews and music from sound artists from Edmonton and abroad. The No Normal podcast will also include stories, guest interviewers, conversations with friends, local organizations, and much more! You can listen to The No Normal on Soundcloud or subscribe via your favourite podcast service.

Kelly Ruth – Echo Beneath Surface Tension

Dates: durational, between September 17 and September 19.
Venue: online via YouTube, and Second Life.

New Music Edmonton is thrilled to present Echo Beneath Surface Tension, a newly-commissioned virtual installation in Second Life by new media artist Kelly Ruth. As part of Echo Beneath Surface Tension, Kelly Ruth will be setting up a 48 hour live stream of the life of her avatar, Poppy Morris. The live stream will include a series of scheduled events, or you can tune in on YouTube at any time of day to see what Poppy is up to.

NME and Kelly Ruth will be hosting a workshop on September 7, on creating your own avatar and navigating Second Life, so you can experience Echo Beneath Surface Tension as it is meant to be experienced. This event is free, and donations are welcomed to help support our programming. You can also listen to an interview with Kelly Ruth on The No Normal podcast, Episode 4.2.

Bok Brass

October 27, 2024 7:30 PM Holy Trinity Anglican Church

An evening of brass quintets with Edmonton’s Bok Brass, featuring new works by Emilie LeBel and Benjamin Whittier created as part of our pilot mentorship program. Thank you to the Edmonton Arts Council Connections and Exchanges program for making this project possible!

erψn temp3st and Diana Tayler – new multidisciplinary works

January 11, 2025 7:30 PM Mile Zero Dance Space

This show is the second part of our creative mentorship project. Begun in 2023, this side of the project focuses on multidisciplinary work, and features an awesome double bill of new creations and performances: Spinning Stardust,  by emerging artist Diana Taylor, and Cyzmic swAy by mentor erψn temp3st. These two artists will certainly live up to the idea of “multidisciplinary”, with all kinds of amazing elements: live electronic sound, harp, projections, live video, movement, fibre arts, and much, much more! The splendid Mile Zero Dance space is our home for this evening, a really great place to experience the abundance of live, audio, and video streams in the two pieces. Thank you to the Edmonton Arts Council Connections and Exchanges program for making this project possible!

Olivia Shortt

April 4-5, 2025 Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre

It’s always exciting when we can welcome a really cool artist to town for multiple events, and it’s doubly exciting that Olivia Shortt will be appearing for the first time in ᐊᒥᐢᑿᒌᐚᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ Amiskwaciy-wâskahikan (Edmonton). Self-described as a noisemaker, video artist, curator, and troublemaker, Shortt’s work is inspired by their love of camp, drag, and gender expression and its relation to Indigeneity. April 4, 7:30 PM- Olivia Shortt, Matthew Cardinal, and Mustafa Rafiq. April 5, 2 PM – artist talk. April 5, 7:30 PM – Olivia Shortt Makwa.

New Music Edmonton is honoured to be presenting these events in collaboration with the Ociciwan Contemporary Art Centre, whose brilliant advocacy for, and presentation of, work by Indigenous artists is an invaluable part of our region’s artistic milieu.
